Cottage living is all about creating memories, enjoying outdoor activities, and soaking in breathtaking views. At Conestoga Lake, one cottage owner faced unique challenges that limited their ability to fully embrace this lifestyle. Built on a sloped property, their outdoor space was unsuitable for family activities like lawn games and evening gatherings around the fire pit. Compounding these issues, water leaks into their pool house and overgrown bushes obscured their stunning lakeside view.
Below we outline how LP tackled these challenges with a thoughtful approach, meticulous planning, and expert craftsmanship to deliver a transformed outdoor space that exceeded expectations.
Understanding the Challenges-
When we first visited the site, the client’s key pain points became clear:
- Sloped Terrain: The incline made it impractical for recreational use, limiting the space’s functionality.
- Water Issues: Poor grading led to water infiltration in the pool house.
- Obstructed Views: Dense bushes blocked the picturesque lake view, diminishing the property’s natural appeal.
These obstacles called for a landscape solution that addressed practicality, aesthetics, and durability.
Our Approach
1. Initial Consultation and Design Development
We began with an on-site consultation to fully understand the client’s needs and vision. After detailed discussions, we developed a 2D design plan that incorporated functional grading, improved drainage, and aesthetic upgrades. Once the design was finalized and approved, we moved forward with sourcing materials and planning the transformation.
2. Material Selection
The client desired a timeless and cohesive look. We selected dark grey granite Mega Flagstone for its durability and natural elegance, complemented by matching granite armour stone to construct retaining walls and stairs. These materials not only match the cottage brick colour, but also provided the structural stability required for the sloped terrain.
3. Grading and Drainage Plan
To create a flat, usable space, we implemented a detailed grading plan. The new layout redirected water away from the pool house, preventing future leaks and protecting the structure.
4. Adjustments During Construction
During installation, we determined that an increased stair count and retaining wall rise were necessary to achieve optimal results. These adjustments ensured a seamless integration of the functional and aesthetic elements.
